In 2017 after a successful 30-year career in corporate America I had an epiphany, quit my job and decided to walk dogs for a living. Let me back up a bit.

I graduated in 1990 with a degree in zoology and a dream of working with animals. After many applications I accepted a job offer that had nothing to do with animals. That first job led to another and another and before I knew it, I was off down a career path. It was exciting, I was on fire career wise; I was also 50 pounds overweight and suffering from chronic exhaustion from working 12 hour days.

By 2013 I had over 500 people reporting to me, the corner office, the title, the money, everything I thought I wanted. Everything was going well until, in 2014, my company decided to make a change and that change was me. I got fired.

It was a huge shock. I was devastated. My career had defined me. I began a job search and eventually accepted a position for a fraction of the money and much less responsibility.

Fast forward 2 years, I’m doing well at work, I seem to be back on track. One day I’m sitting at my desk watching a giant TV screen in the middle of our workspace showing a slide with a bullet point list of ethics telling me exactly how to be a better person and suddenly, I felt ill. Not only did I want to hurl I was gripped with the absolute certainty that I was in the wrong place.

I started searching, not for a job, but for a path. What I stumbled on was entrepreneurship. I realized that those corporate mission, vision and values were great, but they weren’t my mission, vision and values, and they never would be.

After my epiphany that day I knew I wanted, needed, to start my own business, specifically a pet care business.

In June 2017 I launched Preferred Pet Partners. One year later I left the corporate world. In less than two years I built Preferred Pet Partners into a company with 6 figure revenue and a 12 person team serving hundreds of human and furry clients.

Six years after that fateful epiphany I’m grateful every day for the journey. Along the way I’ve realized my passion is entrepreneurship but more specifically my passion is helping others find their way to something more in their lives. As The Pet Business Coach I help other animal lovers build pet care businesses and realize their passions.

Today I’m healthier, happier and most importantly, I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.
